What is GEO and why does it matter for AI search?
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making your content easy for AI answer engines to understand, summarise and cite. When someone asks an assistant for a recommendation, GEO determines whether your business is part of the answer.
It does not replace SEO. It is the same discipline aimed at a different reader, a model summarising the web rather than a person scanning a results page.
How GEO differs from SEO
Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list. GEO competes for inclusion in a synthesised answer, where there is no ranking to climb and often no click to win. What gets cited is content that states things clearly, unambiguously and verifiably.
The overlap is large. Clean structure, fast pages, real expertise and clear headings help both. The difference is emphasis. GEO rewards direct answers and explicit definitions more than keyword placement.
What actually helps you get cited
Answer the question in the first paragraph, then explain. Use descriptive headings that match how people ask. Define terms plainly. Keep sections short enough to be quoted whole. Add FAQs, because they map neatly onto how questions are asked.
Structured data helps machines confirm what a page is about, who published it and when it was updated. So does consistency, the same business description, service names and contact details everywhere you appear.
- Direct answer first, detail after
- Descriptive question shaped headings
- Plain definitions of key terms
- FAQ sections and structured data
- Consistent business information across the web
What does not help
Keyword stuffing, thin pages spun for every location, and vague marketing language. Models are summarising for a person who wants an answer, and pages that avoid committing to one get skipped.
Padding also hurts. If a definition takes two sentences, write two sentences. Length without substance reduces the density of anything quotable.
How to start this quarter
Take your five highest intent pages and rewrite the opening of each so it answers the question directly. Add an FAQ block to each one. Add organisation and article structured data. Then publish genuinely useful explanations of the things prospects ask before buying.
Track it by asking the assistants directly, on a schedule, and recording whether you appear and how you are described.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Search and AI answers coexist, and both draw on the same crawlable content. GEO is an additional lens on the work rather than a replacement discipline.
How do I make my business easier to find on ChatGPT and AI search?
Publish clear, specific answers to the questions your customers actually ask, keep your business details consistent across the web, add structured data, and make sure your site is crawlable.
